AICKO IPTV: the free app for your IPTV playlists Download

Why use VLC for IPTV

VLC is free, ad-free, available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and plays almost every format: MPEG-TS, HLS, H.264, HEVC. It is therefore perfect for checking that a playlist or stream works: if a channel plays in VLC but not in your app, the problem comes from the app; if it plays nowhere, it comes from the stream.

Opening an M3U playlist on a computer

  1. Open VLC.
  2. Downloaded M3U file: Media menu → Open File, then choose the .m3u file.
  3. Playlist address: Media menu → Open Network Stream (Ctrl + N), paste the address, then Play.
  4. Display the channel list with View → Playlist (Ctrl + L) and double-click a channel.

Opening Xtream Codes access

VLC does not know the Xtream API, but Xtream access can almost always be converted into an M3U playlist. The address generally takes the following form, with your own details:

http://serveur:port/get.php?username=IDENTIFIANT&password=MOTDEPASSE&type=m3u_plus&output=ts

Never share this address: it contains your password. See the Xtream Codes API.

On Android and iPhone

  • Android: menu → Stream, paste the address of the playlist or of a channel.
  • iPhone and iPad: Network tab → Open Network Stream.

Setting the caching

If the picture stutters, increase the buffer: Tools → Preferences → show All settings → Input / Codecs → Network caching, for example 3,000 ms instead of 1,000 ms. Startup is slower, but playback is more stable. See also fixing buffering.

VLC’s limits for IPTV

LimitConsequence
No programme guide for playlistsNo “now / next”
No convenient categories or favouritesSlow navigation in a long list
No organised films and seriesXtream VOD cannot be used
Interface poorly suited to a remoteUncomfortable on a television

For everyday use, a dedicated player such as AICKO IPTV brings the programme guide, films and series, favourites and sync between screens, for free. On PC, see watching television on a PC.

In short

  • VLC plays M3U playlists and IPTV streams on computer and mobile.
  • Media → Open Network Stream, then the playlist shows the channels.
  • Xtream access can be played in VLC by converting it into an M3U address.
  • VLC is ideal for testing; a dedicated IPTV player is more practical every day.
